Printed papers on cartridge paper, all 84 x 59 cms. NB. The papers used in these pictures are each designed and printed by me using a specialist printer and pigment inks. A number of them have been originated to meet the needs of specific pictures. The archive of designs now numbers thousands.
Nineveh
Nineveh, on the banks of the Tigris, was already a city of great antiquity by the time Sennacherib, the ruler of the Assyrian empire made it his capital in the seventh century BC. A network of 18 canals, incorporating a magnificent aqueduct, brought water to the city. There were orchards, gardens, palaces and temples. Sennacherib's own palace had 80 rooms, many of them lined with sculptures and reliefs. The heart of the city was enclosed by eight miles of walls. It is thought by some scholars that the legendary Hanging Gardens of Babylon may in fact have been at Nineveh.
